Gas pipe question

If you're not comfortable with and understanding of gas pipe's abilities and limitations enough to know for sure that what you've done is safe, you really should have a licensed professional look at this. I'm not a fan of the old "have a pro do it" answer us DIYers often run into on forums, but gas plumbing truly is not something for trial and error. No mistakes can be made, it needs to be done 100% right, every time. (And you didn't even include a picture of said "bend", so how can anyone over the internet give an opinion anyway?)

I installed a new Rheem 40 gallon short water heater but the long gas pipe down to the unit is a bit off to a slight angle because it did not line up to the old water heater. Is this a problem I should be concerned about? Does this line have to be straight?

Hi R. Miller,

Yes, the gas pipe should be installed straight so that it will not stress the pipe and the fittings that are attached to the gas pipe line. Please keep in mind that by keeping the gas pipe straight, it will assure you that the gas line will not be under any stress. Also, keeping the gas pipe straight will help prevent any stress cracks or gas leaks from developing in the future.

Please note that you may have to empty the hot water tank to move it so it will line up with the gas pipe. Please do not use any yellow corrugated type of hose to make the final connections. This type of hose can crack or fail due to lightning strikes. If this happens, the gas line can and will punch a hole in that type of hose and can cause a huge fire. I only use 3/4-inch black pipe with pipe dope applied to the threads on every joint. This is the right way that this hot water tank should be installed.

In addition, please be advised that the hot and cold water pipes on top of the hot water tank should also be grounded to each other by connecting a 12-inch piece of #6 green grounding wire to two grounding clamps that should be attached to each of the hot and cold water pipes that go to the hot water tank.

If you need any further advice, please do not hesitate to ask me. I will be very happy to help you in any way that I can.

P.S. Grounding clamps and the 12-inch #6 green grounding wire can be found at Lowe's.

By the way, what was the main reason why you replaced your hot water tank?

Bob
