What is the best excavator rake?
EXCAVATOR RAKES | TRK ATTACHMENTS
Scoop Rakes stand out for heavy land clearing due to their outstanding effectiveness. The scoop design enables the operator to get right under stumps, large rocks, and extensive roots, leveraging the machine's force in an upward motion. Another significant advantage is the scoop profile, which permits the operator to grip larger loads of brush and other material while leaving the soil behind.
The Severe Duty Scoop Rake is equipped with thicker shanks and replaceable teeth, significantly reducing maintenance throughout its lifecycle.

Looking to buy a root rake for an excavator. I was wondering whether to get a scoop or one more suited for a Dozer, particularly if I'll be using it with a thumb.

I use the USA attachment stumped/root rake on my JD LC160; it makes clearing ground simple along with many other tasks.

I'm not knowledgeable about these things enough to know what I'm looking at there. Do you use a "pin grabber" type attachment to switch from the bucket? I've considered getting a rake attachment but wasn't sure about the complexity of changing it out without a quick change type attachment. Thanks for sharing.

Yes, we have a pin grabber on the machine.

Do you have a thumb? I bet that scoop rake would be handy with one. You might be able to pick up bigger trees with it. Often, you wouldn't even need the regular bucket for clearing tree lines of light trees, I would bet.

My opinion would be to go with the top one. We converted a wheel loader rake to fit our machine, and it works great. The profile of the bottom scoop design might not let you grab individual logs firmly, and your thumb could be up against the times and still leave an empty void. You will still be able to grab a large amount of material with the top one. Just make sure you give them the dimensions of your thumb so that the rake and thumb match up.

I also have the style made by USA Attachments. I take the rake off and use the two prongs to dig stumps. I would buy it again; I have not been able to hurt it.

You need a rake wide enough to let dirt pass through; otherwise, you'll end up with a bucket. The quick coupler is nice but not necessary. My thumb matches the end of the two center teeth; it's a fast tool.

I say the top one (less curve) for a hydraulic thumb and the bottom one for a fixed or no thumb. Good-looking rakes, regardless of what you choose.

I have a Werk Brau rake for my 170 excavator—very well built. I think it was $4500. Love it.

Looks like a good Canadian company. Be cautious of made in China rakes. If you have a powerful hoe, you will tear it up. How much is it?
I have a NYE rake, which I paid a lot for, but it has held up. It's more the scoop style. I think the spacing between the teeth should be tight—you don't want chunks falling through when you're sifting through burn piles or debris. We use it for that and dressing up a job.
My next attachment will be one of those two-prong stump pullers.

We are using a D/S rake on our machine and are very happy with it. It's well-built and simple.
