HPS - Hydroxypropyl Starch Ether

Please visit our website for more information on this topic.

Hydroxypropyl starch ether, commonly known as HPS, is an ionic starch ether derived from starch through various chemical and physical processes. This non-toxic, scentless white or beige powder dissolves in cold water, forming a transparent or translucent viscous liquid. It provides excellent thickening, adhesion, dispersion, emulsification, suspension, adsorption, surface activity, and water retention properties.

ETON Hydroxypropyl starch ether is a chemically modified starch, primarily used as a thickener and texturing agent in cement or gypsum-based mortars. It plays a significant role in construction.

ETON’s HPS is cost-effective and easy to acquire, providing the desired thickening. In wet mortars, it ensures non-sag, anti-slip properties, good workability, and low stickiness.

Key properties

1. Rapid thickening ability.

2. Medium viscosity and high water retention.

3. High effectiveness even in small amounts.

4. Can be combined with methyl cellulose (MC) and HPMC to reduce cellulose ether usage.

5. Enhances resistance to sagging, preventing the flow of materials when applied.

6. Improves lubrication, ensuring smoother operation of materials.

Applications

Our HPS product is widely used in tile adhesives, cement/gypsum mortars, and various putty powders (cement-based, gypsum-based, and gray calcium-based).

You will receive efficient and considerate service from Ding’ao.

As an excellent thickener and water retention agent, our HPS ensures improved slip resistance, better workability, and extended open time with minimal dosage.

Differences between HPS and HPMC

HPS (hydroxypropyl starch ether) is often mistaken for common starch, but they are quite different. Even in small quantities, HPS significantly enhances mortar products.

HPS is prepared from natural plants, highly etherified, and spray dried, making it distinct from regular starches.

Hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC), known as hypromellose, is derived from pure cotton cellulose. The process involves alkalization, etherification with propylene oxide and methyl chloride, followed by washing and neutralizing. HPMC serves multiple industries as a film former, binder, dispersant, stabilizer, and thickener.

HPMC can be combined with cement-based, gypsum-based, and ash-calcium products, offering good compatibility with other admixtures. When used alongside HPMC, HPS can reduce HPMC usage by 20%-30%, enhance thickening, promote internal structure integrity, provide better crack resistance, and improve workability.
