The Best Fitness Trackers - The New York Times

Since 2015, we have extensively tested 46 different fitness trackers by running, walking, swimming, cycling, sleeping, and basically living with them both day and night. While no single tracker flawlessly recorded every metric, we determined that the straightforward yet feature-rich Fitbit Inspire 3 is the go-to choice for most users. It efficiently monitors activities like distance traveled, step count, heart rate, and estimated calories burned.

Once perceived as advanced gadgets, wrist-worn fitness trackers that track steps and heart rate have now evolved. Modern iterations are increasingly sophisticated, featuring capabilities such as personalized workout regimes and the ability to monitor stress levels and sleep quality.

The Apple Watch SE stands out by providing extremely accurate readings, and with a mobile plan, it doubles as a device for calls and messaging. However, its shorter battery life pales compared to our Fitbit selections.

The latest Charge series model maintains the line's tradition of precise activity monitoring, although several new features necessitate Google integration.

This intuitive tracker is comfortable for all-day wear and provides precise measurements without overwhelming the user with too much on-screen information.

We performed two primary tests on each device, using a chest-strap heart rate monitor as a benchmark for comparison.

We walked, jogged, and ran with each fitness tracker to evaluate their accuracy in documenting workout data.

We also wore each device for a continuous 48 hours, comparing step-count data against a highly accurate pedometer.

The Fitbit Inspire 3 emerged as the most precise tracker for step count and ranked highly in all other tests. Its 1.5-inch touchscreen is easy to navigate, with sharp colors and clearly readable text and icons. The slim, half-inch band is unobtrusive during both workouts and daily activities, and the Inspire 3 is incredibly lightweight at just 0.32 ounces—lighter than most USB flash drives.

The Fitbit app, available for free, connects you with other Fitbit users, facilitates stress management, and allows for in-depth data analysis, such as heart-rate history. A premium version, available for $10 per month or $80 per year, unlocks additional features including access to apps like Calm for sleep and meditation. The Inspire 3's battery is marketed to last up to 10 days, though our findings suggest it often falls short of this claim.

Battery life: up to 10 days
Water resistance: up to 50 meters
GPS: when connected to a phone

The Fitbit Charge 6 brings several upgrades over its predecessor, the Charge 5, which we previously recommended. The most notable improvement is a haptic side button for easier screen navigation, addressing the sometimes unresponsive touchscreen. The Charge 6 also features built-in GPS, unlike the Inspire 3, and provides access to Google Maps, Google Wallet, and YouTube Music (subscription required). However, in our distance tracking tests, the Inspire 3 outperformed the Charge 6.

Battery life: up to seven days
Water resistance: up to 50 meters
GPS: built-in

The second-generation Apple Watch SE boasts a vibrant, clear display and the most intuitive touchscreen among the devices we tested. Even without an iPhone connection, users can access a wide range of apps. Performance-wise, the Apple Watch SE—also our top budget pick for iPhone users—accurately measured heart rate, steps, and distance. However, for those simply looking to track their running pace and distance, the Apple Watch SE might be excessive, particularly given its high cost and limited battery life.

Battery life: up to 18 hours
Water resistance: up to 50 meters
GPS: built-in
