The Russians are increasingly employing their UMPK guidance kit onto the FAB series of high-explosive aerial bombs. The UMPK is the (low-tech) Russian version of the JDAM. UMPK stands forUnifitsirovannyi Modul Planirovaniya i Korrektsii (Unified gliding and correction module, in English). As Ukraine advances on the left bank of the Dnipro River, in Kherson Oblast, Russia has been using a large number of UMPKs. On November 05 alone, Russia is reported to have used 89 UMPKs in the Kherson area, which strongly suggests that Russia is more worried about the ongoing cross-river operation than it admits. These photos show a failed strike. This is a 250 kg high-explosive bomb (FAB-250 M62) fitted with a UMPK kit but they have been more commonly found with the 500 kg (FAB-500 M62) versions of this bomb. Some Russian sources have claimed that there is also a UMPK kit available for the FAB-1500 M54 but this seems unlikely, bearing in mind the size, weight and shape of the FAB-1500 M54. The UMPK uses a simple inertial navigation guidance system and Russia’s GLONASS satellite navigation system.
