I've had the experience of pouring hot water for tea into an old never-used teapot and having it crack instantly. I've been told this happens sometimes when china is very old and hasn't ever been used. Is there any way this can be prevented so I can start using the china? I read somewhere a suggestion to soak it in a tub of water for a few days prior to use, which is not a recommendation I've seen anywhere else. Is it destined to live forever in a china cabinet?

I have a quantity of good quality vintage bone china (Wedgewood, Shelley, Spode etc). It's all from the 1950s-70s. It's never been used and has no cracks or crazing. What's the best way to ease it into use without it shattering?
