Our 40 gallon gas water heater died 3 days ago and I found the electronic gas valve (EGV ) had failed on it. After I made a few calls, I found that with the price of next day air shipping and tax, that a new EGV would be half the cost of a new gas water heater.
So with our WH being 10 years old, I just bought a new AO Smith WH and installed it, as we needed hot water. Because waking up to find NO hot water for a shower ... is a natural disaster to me at least.
I have a feeling our new AO Smith WH tank/burner assembly will outlast its EGV. So I wonder if it is a good idea for a person to later on, maybe just get a spare EGV unit to keep on hand ? Or would it be a waste of $$$ ?
The pic is of the new A O Smith 40 gallon WH's EGV...

Water heaters wear out in various ways. I think the consensus is to replace them at 10-12 years, especially if they have any failure after about 8 years. Sure, some last 20-25-30 years, but a failure can be so inconvenient (and potentially destructive) that I would have replaced the whole thing on such a major component drop.

I did replace our failed WH.I guess I was going by the old WH's with the old style gas control valves on them that were lasting 12- 20 years. So my new WH will probably be dead at 10 years anyway, so having a spare EGV is moot ? It has a 6 yr warranty on the tank only. One year only on the other parts.

I'm sorry, I misread your post as having replaced the valve, not the heater. I blame low caffeine and my dog.

Every single part can fail. However I have not heard of gas valves as being a particular weak spot. Most hot water heaters seem to fail by corrosion-induced leaks. Certainly this has been my experience (sample size = 1).
No, I wouldn't buy a spare gas valve.

Even if I did install one those new WH units that does not heat hot water, as it stops heating when the water gets hot.
Sorry Rational...I just HAD to ..
Yeah, I agree in retrospect that stocking a $260.00 EGV will be a poor gamble for me.Even if I did install one those new WH units that does not heat hot water, as it stops heating when the water gets hot.Sorry Rational...I just HAD to ..

Furnace Gas Valve Replacement Cost: How Much Does It ...
The gas valve replacement cost can vary based on several factors:
Type of Gas Valve: Standard gas valves are generally more affordable, while more advanced, staged gas valves, which offer greater control and efficiency, tend to be more expensive.
Brand and Model Compatibility: Some high-efficiency furnace models require specific, brand-compatible gas valves, which can affect the cost.
Labor Cost: The complexity of the installation and the expertise of the technician also play a role in determining the overall labor cost.
On average, homeowners can expect the gas valve cost to range between $200 to $600, including parts and labor. However, this range can vary depending on your location and the specific requirements of your furnace system. The cost of furnace gas valve replacement can vary based on the specific requirements of your furnace system and the expertise of the technician.
Duration of Replacement
Replacing a gas valve typically takes a few hours. The process involves shutting off the gas supply, removing the old valve, installing the new valve, and ensuring everything is safely and correctly connected. An experienced technician can perform this task efficiently, minimizing the downtime of your heating system. During the replacement process, other components such as the blower motor may also be inspected to ensure the overall efficiency of the furnace system.
Conclusion
Understanding the gas valve replacement cost is crucial for homeowners to plan and budget for furnace maintenance. While the cost can vary, investing in timely replacements and regular maintenance can save you from more significant expenses in the long run and ensure your home remains warm and comfortable. Maintaining your gas furnace in good working order is a cost-effective form of heating your home, ensuring long-term savings and comfort. Always consult with a licensed HVAC professional to get an accurate estimate and high-quality service for your specific furnace model and requirements.
