Important milestone in surface drilling automation
In the midst of the 4th industrial revolution, Epiroc presents an important milestone for surface drilling in open-pit mining and quarrying. With a push of a button it is now possible to complete entire drill patterns autonomously.
Not only will this remove the operator from potentially hazardous benches in a mine or a quarry, it will let the operator carry out other tasks while the rig is drilling. Other benefits are increased productivity and better hole quality. This means more holes drilled per shift, in part because automating the drilling process results in continuous operations without breaks and with less wear on drilling tools. In addition to this, positioning is faster and more accurate.
The achievement had not been possible if it wasnt for the strong partnership between Epiroc and Newmont Goldcorp (fmr. Goldcorp) and their dedicated staff in the Hollinger open-pit mine in Timmins, Canada. Epirocs 6th Sense way of working was used to implement and develop the fully autonomous SmartROC D65. In the project, Epiroc and Newmont Goldcorp collaborated on a tailored solution that gathers ongoing insights to optimize process and people performance and unlock the potential of machine automation using interoperability.
What Are the Advantages of Top Hammer Drilling Tools?
What Are the Advantages of Top Hammer Drilling Tools?
In the mining and construction industry, drilling is a crucial aspect of the entire process. Whether it's for drilling blast holes, anchor holes, or exploration drilling, choosing the right drilling tools is crucial for successful and efficient operations. One such drilling tool that has proven to be highly effective is the top hammer drilling tool. In this article, we'll explore what top hammer drilling tools are, their advantages, and how they compare to other drilling methods.
What are top hammer drilling tools?
Top hammer drilling tools are a type of drilling tool used to drill holes in rock, hard ground, and other surfaces. These tools, combined with drill rig and rock drill, provide the impact force needed to break rock or ground. The hammer is positioned at the top of the drilling tool, hence the name "top hammer." The drilling tool is attached to a drill string that rotates the tool and advances it into the ground. (You may be interested in rock drilling tools manufacturers)
How is the top hammer drilling made?
Top hammer drilling is a complex process that involves several steps. Firstly, a drill rig is set up at the drilling site, providing stability and support. The drill string, consisting of drill rods and a drill bit, is then connected to the rig. The drill bit is specifically designed for top hammer drilling, with a carbide button or chisel-shaped inserts for efficient rock penetration. As the rig operates, the drill string is rotated and pushed into the rock formation. Simultaneously, a hydraulic or pneumatic hammer strikes the top of the drill string, transferring impact energy to the drill bit. This percussive action breaks the rock, and the drill cuttings are flushed out using water or air. This process continues until the desired depth is reached, and the drill string is then retrieved. Top hammer drilling is a highly effective method for extracting valuable resources and constructing foundations in challenging geological conditions.
What are the top hammer drilling tools used for?
Top hammer drilling tools are essential equipment used in various industries for drilling purposes. These tools are primarily employed in mining, construction, and quarrying operations. They are specifically designed to penetrate hard rock formations efficiently and accurately. Top hammer drilling tools are commonly used for tasks such as drilling blast holes for explosives, creating anchor holes for support systems, and conducting exploration drilling. These tools utilize percussive action, where the drill bit strikes the rock surface at high frequency, enabling faster and deeper drilling. With their ability to handle tough drilling conditions, top hammer drilling tools play a crucial role in extracting resources, constructing foundations, and ensuring the success of various industrial projects.
Advantages of top hammer drilling tools
High drilling speed and efficiency
Top hammer drilling tools are known for their high drilling speed and efficiency. They can drill holes quickly and accurately, reducing the time and cost of drilling operations. The hammer's impact mechanism ensures that the tool penetrates the ground surface quickly, and the drill string's rotation helps to maintain a straight hole.

Top hammer drilling tools are highly effective in drilling through hard rock formations. The hammer's impact mechanism delivers a high impact force, breaking the rock surface and allowing the tool to penetrate deeper. This makes them ideal for mining and construction operations that require hard rock drilling.
Low maintenance and downtime
Top hammer drilling tools are known for their durability and reliability. They require minimal maintenance, reducing downtime and increasing productivity. They are also designed with replaceable wear parts, which makes it easy to replace worn-out parts and extend the tool's lifespan.
Versatility
Top hammer drilling tools are versatile and can be used for a wide range of drilling applications. They can be used for drilling blast holes, anchor holes, and exploration drilling, among other applications. This versatility makes them a valuable tool in the mining and construction industry.
Top hammer drilling tools are a valuable tool in the mining and construction industry. They offer high drilling speed and efficiency, are suitable for hard rock drilling, require minimal maintenance and downtime, and are versatile.
How to select top hammer drilling tools?
Selecting the right top hammer drilling tools is crucial for ensuring efficient and successful drilling operations. Firstly, consider the type of rock formation you will be drilling into and choose a drill bit with suitable carbide buttons or chisel-shaped inserts. Assess the required hole diameter and select a drill bit accordingly. Consider the drilling depth and choose drill rods of appropriate length and diameter. Evaluate the drilling rigs capabilities and ensure compatibility with the chosen drilling tools. Consider factors such as tool durability, reliability, and ease of maintenance. Lastly, consult with experts or manufacturers to ensure you have the right combination of top hammer drilling tools for your specific drilling needs.
