I know this is probably a stupid post however, I have a Norwall bristle board that I bought at Walmart. I guess it&#;s not a very good board? I do get a whole lot of darts bouncing off of the metal. I know they&#;re not expensive but does that really happen a lot less with a better board? And if so if it professional board is more forgiving wouldn&#;t it make you a better player to practice on a crappy board and hit the board more cleanly instead of the metal at all?

What is the advantage to having a really nice dartboard

In my opinion, use whatever board you can afford ... it's all fun in the long run !!!

If you know what I'm doing, don't tell me .... I find bliss in my confusion.

I assume by cheap board you mean a round wire with staples ? there fine to start on but as you get better you will probably want a diamond wire board, just for the reason you mentioned less bounce outs & bigger targets with thinner wires

That&#;s what I figured. I actually would have had my first and even a second 180 had I not bounced out my third dart a few times. Damn!! I&#;m thinking I want to get a Winnmau blade or a unicorn Eclipse HD any suggestions?

Here's your major problems.  The spider is round wire with staples - you'll get more bounce outs for sure. That board in the link

sort

of hints (self healing) it's sisal fibre, but undoubtedly lower end at best.  And no removable number ring. That means you can't rotates the board to even out wear.  The last 2 points mean the board won't last long at all.

Personally - if just starting - I'd worry about good sisal and a reputable brand - with a removable number ring.  Having said that, not that great a difference between a good blade wire board and round wire - once you get into the better names.

So won't solve issues with your game - or make you learn faster.  It will be with you longer to get the practice in, and that

does

make a difference. Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.

Thanks for that and I agree. I must admit I&#;m a gear junkie. I love have great equipment weather it&#;s tools my stereo or dart gear. I love the idea of a hood board now that you mention it I did not realize that you can rotate a board to make it last longer. That&#;s good to know and it makes perfect sense. I&#;ve only had this board about two or three weeks and I&#;m already wearing out the 20s.

Major brands I can think of are Winmau, One80, Unicorn, Shot, and Target. Probably a few more, but that'll get you started. Check the dartboards section for more reading - link . For rotating, this thread might help:

I see you're in the States and my usual go-to for dart boards is A to Z Darts. They have good prices on boards and the one I'm currently using is a One80 Gladiator III steel tip and I've also used the Winmau Blade series with the Blade 5 being the last one I got from them.

They both are in the $65 U.S. range and I believe they ship for free, but can't say for sure.

Both have razor wire spiders for less bounceouts and better scoring opportunities and the sisal is very compact so darts hold well in the boards.

The  board you are currently using, would probably make a good back up board, or, practice board (because of the smaller segments) after you move on.

I dont think you can go far wrong with a winmau blade board, I have never used a unicorn eclipse, but, suspect most boards with wires that look similar to a blade, type board are either ok, or, better than ok as boards (I have only ever used winmau  boards, but, there are other good board makers).

Some of the comments / advice above (from others) are very valid points, to bear in mind, when choosing your new board.

Usual set up :- 23 gram, darts clearance (no name scalloped darts) with a 50 mm barrel, 41 mm nylon shafts + standard flights.

Trying out, red dragon 24g hell fire b, with 41 mm nylon shafts + kite flights (fly well, these).

Other barrels I quite like, are, 24 gram knurled assassins (by harrows).

Various random, other darts, on my rotation, from 20 to 24 grams.

Round wires will catch and cause darts with sharp pointy points to bounce out. (More often)

A sharp pointy arrow can punch into the round wire of the board - make a crater in the metal wire and the energy of the dart has no where to go but to bounce back.

Rounded Point hitting a Round Wire has a much better chance to slide off each other.

Probably best not to do this on expensive darts.

Sent from my Motorola DynaTAC X using Mind/Machine Interface damp string and cup technology.

I new so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

I bought the same board you did as my first, and I think it was a mistake. I picked up a thin wire from Amazon and it was only $25 more. The difference is night and day. I get a lot of bounce outs from the round wire board. I'm a beginner and throw too hard, and those round wires are starting to bend and come out of the board. Since switching to a better board I haven't had any bounce outs. If I hit the thin wire the dart just deflects into the bed
