Before making a purchase decision on an aluminum fence, it’s essential to conduct thorough research. Aluminum fences typically come in three grades: residential, light commercial, and commercial. Understanding the advantages and disadvantages of each grade is crucial to ensuring long-term satisfaction. You wouldn’t want to end up with a faded and damaged fence just a couple of years after installation. Below, we detail the three primary grades of aluminum fencing.
Three Grades of Aluminum Fence
RESIDENTIAL GRADE: Residential grade aluminum is the most commonly quoted grade when homeowners seek estimates for an aluminum fence. This is because fence companies promote residential grade due to its lower manufacturing costs and potential for significant markup. However, be cautious; while it may seem like a bargain, there are several drawbacks.
The first significant issue is that residential grade usually features an enamel clear coat or subpar powder coating system. This results in coatings that quickly deteriorate, leading to fading within 6 to 12 months. If opting for residential grade, it’s crucial to choose a manufacturer that incorporates UV-ray inhibitors in their powder coating, as re-powder coating can be costly.
The second concern with residential grade aluminum is its thin material composition. Because aluminum is a commodity, reducing the amount of raw aluminum used raises profit margins. Common causes for damage to residential grade fences include landscaping tools and children playing nearby. The structure typically includes pickets measuring 5/8" x 5/8" and 1" rails, which can be easily bent with minimal pressure. While bent pickets might not seem severe, they can lead to costly problems, like pets escaping or compromised pool barriers, resulting in a costly repair bill.
The third concern is the way standard industry aluminum fencing is assembled. Most frames are fastened together using inexpensive 1 1/4" self-tapping aluminum screws, which can loosen and fail over time, compromising the integrity of the fence. Residential grade aluminum is not recommended for high traffic or homes needing regular lawn maintenance.
At Paramount Fencing, we DO NOT recommend Residential Grade Aluminum.
COMMERCIAL GRADE: For a slight increase in cost, homeowners can opt for a commercial grade aluminum fence. This choice is ideal for residential properties with moderate to high usage. The pickets are sturdier, being 3/4" x 3/4" thick, and offer much more strength than residential grade. These pickets cannot be easily bent by hand, and the thicker rails contribute to the overall durability of the fence.
Most commercial aluminum fences utilize polyester powder coatings that meet AAMA minimum requirements. While most of these coatings include UV-ray protection, not all are created equal. The best metric for coating quality is the manufacturer's warranty—warranties less than thirty years indicate inferior quality. Always choose aluminum fences from manufacturers who have undergone independent third-party testing, ensuring their coatings withstand a rigorous number of hours in extreme conditions, particularly in saltwater exposure common in Florida.
For detailed product recommendations, see the section below.
We strongly recommend this grade of aluminum for your property.
INDUSTRIAL GRADE: This type of aluminum fencing is typically utilized for community pools, parking lots, and manufacturing facilities. Due to the higher costs involved, industrial grade fences are not frequently found around residential homes. Industrial grade fences typically feature pickets measuring 1" and have wall thickness exceeding a millimeter. This grade can also be welded for a seamless and robust structure.
Regardless of which grade you select, it’s vital to ask questions. Not all aluminum fencing manufacturers or grades are alike. Don’t hesitate to reach out to Paramount for answers.

Buyers Guide: Pool Cages & Screened Enclosures
A Buyer’s Guide to Pool Cages and Screened Enclosures
We aim to assist homeowners in navigating the process of acquiring a new pool cage, screen enclosure, and additional items.
Here’s a checklist of critical aspects that will help you develop questions for a potential home improvement company. Don’t make decisions on limited information—gather all necessary facts from a sales representative when soliciting bids for your project.
Even though the core materials may be alike, it’s crucial to conduct a thorough comparison of ancillary materials such as fasteners, screen type, door quality, hardware quality and any advanced technology that will enhance the performance, aesthetics, and longevity of your enclosure.
If you don’t inquire, companies often supply the cheapest components to maximize profit margins.
We advise thorough fact-finding before finalizing your decision, as doing so will lead to greater satisfaction in the long run!
ALUMINUM FRAME:
Most specialized aluminum companies utilize similar stock aluminum for pool cages and enclosures. National aluminum distributors supply local businesses, allowing for pre-cut frames to fit specified engineering requirements. Color options are typically limited to white and bronze.
TRAC BEAM:
The current preferred trac beam uses a high-strength alloy, allowing for larger, stronger spans. This alloy can be specified for vertical supports, facilitating wider spans and improved sight lines over weaker beams. To cut costs, some companies might opt for a lower strength aluminum alloy, which can compromise structure.
Absolute Aluminum specs: high-strength aluminum alloy for optimum tensile strength, offering extended spans for better visibility in your enclosure.
BEAM CONNECTIONS:
The best practice for connecting trac beams involves using beam knuckles with internal gusset plates. In contrast, some lower-cost options utilize a scissor connection (overlapping beams), which lacks the strength and aesthetic appeal of the aforementioned method.

Absolute Aluminum specs: H32 alloy gusset plates ensure maximum tensile strength. All our connections are made with beam knuckles and internal gusset plates. We also exclusively use premium 18/8 stainless or Pro-Tech fasteners to prevent rust and maintain appearance.
FASTENERS:
Most companies use zinc fasteners because they are easily accessible and cost-effective. However, rusted heads or rust rings around fasteners in enclosures are common due to zinc corroding over time.
Some companies will offer an upgrade to stainless fasteners. While this is better than zinc, be mindful of the quality grades being used. There are two types of stainless steel: 401 (basic) and 18/8 (premium). The 401 grade is still prone to rust but at a slower rate compared to zinc. Due to dissimilar metals, corrosion can result over time where the metals contact each other.
Investing in a quality 18/8 stainless fastener is advisable. Despite being a softer metal, the paint on the white or bronze heads can chip off during installation. Furthermore, dissimilar metal issues continue to exist. However, we highly recommend 18/8 stainless over alternatives, as they provide much better value.
An innovative option worth considering is Nylo-Tec and Pro-Tec fasteners, featuring polycarbonate heads that bond with metal screws in rust-resistant material. The advantages include a non-paint finish that prevents chipping, rust-free heads, and no dissimilar metal reactions, due to the polycarbonate head interfacing with aluminum structures. Plus, the screws are made from stronger materials (steel), offering superior performance in Florida’s climate.
SCREEN:
You can choose from various screen options based on your needs and budget. We classify these types into two categories: Basic screen and Specialty screen:
BASIC SCREEN:
Chinese Screen—many companies might default to utilizing imported Chinese screen due to its lower cost compared to US-made options.
Basic fiberglass—most companies provide a basic fiberglass screen within your enclosure, with leading manufacturers like Phifer and Twitchell supplying most US screens, and integrating innovative additives that prolong their lifespan.
SPECIALTY SCREEN:
Super Screen—considering an upgrade from basic fiberglass, Super Screen lasts three times longer. It’s 18% heavier with superior tear and tensile strength that is 100% stronger than basic options. This fabric also has UV-tolerant properties, aiding in prolonged color retention, longevity, and filtration capabilities. Backed by a 10-year warranty, Super Screen is an excellent upgrade.
Pet Screen—if pets are a concern regarding screen damage, consider using Pet Screen, which is made of strong vinyl-coated polyester, significantly resisting damage from pets while incorporating Microban® antimicrobial properties for additional protection.
Better Vue—if your screening obstructs a picturesque view, Better Vue® provides exceptional clarity. It offers 33% more insect protection and 10% more sunlight transmission while also providing 15% more openness for airflow. Additionally, it has improved wind-load ratings, passing 100 mph wind tunnel tests.
Solar / Sun Screen—Phifer offers a line of solar and sun screens capable of decreasing heat/glaring sun rays. Primarily suited for room enclosures or patios, Solar Screens can effectively block up to 70% of the solar heat and glare.
Privacy Screen—designed to obstruct view from outsiders, also known as ‘Florida Glass,’ this privacy screen is composed of vinyl-laminated fiberglass, resembling obscured glass while keeping debris out.
Absolute Outdoor Living Screens
Patio Scenes—these are printed scenic screens that enhance the look of your pool area, adding both privacy and flair!
ADDITIONAL ACCESSORIES:
Absolute Aluminum has always led technological breakthroughs in building materials for pool cage and screen enclosure applications. We provide two products tested and approved for use in Florida, exclusively available through Absolute Aluminum.
E-Z Drain—this innovative solution addresses longstanding concerns for pool cage owners regarding water drainage. Usually, pool decks are built to slightly slope toward the outer edge, directing rainwater to the bottom rail of the cage. E-Z drains can be strategically inserted to allow water to drain easily, reducing standing water issues after storms. If you’ve tried washing your deck, you know how challenging it can be. Now, you can effortlessly direct dirt and water toward the nearest E-Z drain for quicker cleaning.
VIP Fasteners—these were designed to eliminate the need for fasteners to penetrate the 1x2 bottom rail while anchoring it to the deck. Conventional fasteners cause minimal dimpling to the bottom rail over time, leading to rusting and needing eventual replacement.
The VIP Anchor employs a polycarbonate anchor attached to the deck using two tap screws, with the required quantity depending on the engineering specifications and wind load requirements. Once installed, the 1x2 bottom rail snaps into place, ensuring a secure, compliance-approved fastening solution without visible fasteners or rusting issues.
ALUMINUM DOORS:
Standard Doors—standard pool enclosure doors typically offer basic functionality, commonly accompanied by push-button handles (mostly made in China), clip locks, hydraulic closers, and rubber sweeps at the bottom. Prepare to replace these parts over time as wear and tear occurs.
Upgraded Doors—investing a little extra in upgraded doors enhances their feel and quality. These doors should be sturdier, providing a noticeable difference in operation. Most upgraded doors will feature continuous piano hinges for years of reliable use. A weather strip on the Z Bar minimizes noise during closure and insect infiltration, while adjustable sweeps at the bottom ensure tighter seals on all surfaces.
Upgraded Hardware—the handles should come with a Tasman keyed security lock for added security. Ensure the lock penetrates the frame thoroughly, unlike basic plastic locks. A high-performance closure tube enhances efficiency and durability long-term.
If you are contemplating a new cage or enclosure, investing in superior doors and hardware features is worthwhile, providing greater enjoyment and potential cost-saving over time.
COMPANY INSTALLERS or SUB-CONTRACTORS
Home improvement companies often seek inexpensive labor. Is this what you desire? Ensure you know who will be responsible for installing your pool cage or enclosure. How experienced is the team? What is their duration of service in this particular field?
Find out whether the laborers are in-house staff or subcontractors. Quality can vary, and you are entitled to inquire about their identity and experience level. The installation process can significantly influence your overall satisfaction with your purchase.
JOB SCOPE & EXPECTATION
A professional installation crew will meet with you before commencing work to review project details and the planned methodology. How long will the installation last? Do they handle cleanup, including debris disposal? Request a comprehensive walkthrough post-job to ensure completion and satisfaction.
SERVICE DEPARTMENT
Does the selected company provide a dedicated service department? Are there charges for service calls or labor? What is the response time for service requests? These are vital considerations. Which company ensures service long after the installation of your pool cage or enclosure?
STATE CERTIFIED GENERAL CONTRACTOR (GC)
When evaluating a company, verify that they hold the necessary licenses to secure permits for your project. Is there a licensed General Contractor involved? Have they provided a copy of their active license? Many home improvement companies may utilize a ‘qualifier’ contractor for permit purposes. Ensure your chosen company maintains a proper legal relationship recognized by Florida state laws.
PERMITS & INSPECTIONS
Confirm that the home improvement company pulls the appropriate permits for work as stated in your agreement. Undertaking work without proper permits incurs legal violations that could result in job closure by enforcement officers. Always ensure a well-displayed copy of permits on-site prior to any undertaking, safeguarding both you and your residence.
GENERAL LIABILITY INSURANCE
A general liability insurance policy protects against unforeseen damage arising from the work performed. Most policies cover each undertaking up to $1,000,000, offering protection against potential damages. Home improvement companies typically require this; however, validate that the contractor holding the qualifier also possesses a valid policy, and request a copy for your records.
WORKERS COMPENSATION INSURANCE
Every individual carrying out work on your premises should hold workers' compensation coverage, protecting you from liabilities if someone gets injured on your property. Ensure the company can produce their workers' comp policy, or provide legal exemptions if applicable.
