Are Compostable Utensils Better Than Plastic? - ECOlunchbox
Reevaluating Biodegradable Utensils
Plant-based, compostable, or biodegradable bio-plastics, especially those used for utensils, are often marketed as sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics. But are they truly better? Or could they be even worse than traditional plastic?

To gain deeper insights, we spoke with Céline Jennison, founder of Plastic Tides, a nonprofit based in Ithaca, NY. She highlighted why these seemingly eco-friendly products might not be as beneficial as they appear and shared her favorite alternatives.
Understanding Biodegradable and Compostable Labels
What do these terms really mean?
Labels like "biodegradable" or "compostable" on bio-plastic products typically mean that under the right conditions, such as those found in industrial composting facilities, these products will break down.
Can individuals compost these products at home?
Composting these products at home can be challenging. Home compost bins usually don't generate the high temperatures needed to break down bio-plastics effectively. Even industrial composting doesn't always result in high-quality compost, as the remnants can be sticky and resinous.
Interestingly, Ithaca, NY, where I studied at Cornell University, doesn't accept compostable utensils in the city's waste stream due to these issues.
Are these products recyclable?
No, they generally can't be recycled. Unlike plastic, these bio-plastics disrupt the recycling process and often end up in landfills if not disposed of properly.
For instance, in restaurants that offer compostable utensils, proper disposal by customers is rare, leading to contamination of recycling streams and increased landfill waste.
The Hidden Costs of Compostable Utensils
Resource-Intensive Production
Creating compostable utensils consumes significant resources. Corn, often used in these products, requires extensive water, fertilizer, and pesticides. This land and resource use for single-use items is hardly sustainable.
Environmental and Economic Costs
Disposing of and transporting these utensils adds to their environmental footprint. Moreover, compostable utensils are often more expensive than reusable alternatives, which can be washed and reused for years.
Contradictions and Challenges
Ironically, compostable utensils often come wrapped in non-biodegradable plastic film, adding another layer of waste. These items might end up worse than traditional plastics.
Are Recyclable Plastics Better?
It depends. If disposed of properly, recyclable plastic might be more environmentally friendly than compostable products that can't be composted effectively.
The Ocean Myth
A bio-plastic fork floating in the ocean won't break down any better than a regular plastic fork unless subjected to very high temperatures.
Popular Misconceptions About Bio-Plastic Utensils
The Illusion of a Disposable Economy
Bio-plastic utensils reinforce the misconception that we can maintain a disposable economy without adverse effects. The reality is, reducing waste from the outset is crucial.
Better Alternatives for Events
Eco-Friendly Event Planning
For events like music festivals or weddings, consider using utensils made from truly compostable materials like bamboo or leaves. These options are better recognized by guests and help in proper disposal.
Reusable Solutions
For large events, consider implementing a zero-waste plan with reusable items and hiring services that provide and later collect these items. If using a caterer, ensure they utilize real dishware and utensils.

Simple Solutions
Bringing your own reusable utensils and containers is one of the best alternatives. There are plenty of market products designed for convenience and sustainability, like the Splash Box from ECOlunchbox's Blue Water Bento collection.
