What is the use of cold laminating film?
Difference Between Hot and Cold Lamination Film
The technique of laminating a document depends on whether you use a hot or cold laminator. A cold laminator uses pressure and adhesive to secure documents. Some individuals prefer these machines over hot laminators due to the nature of the material they are working with or a need for prolonged outdoor lifespan.

Hot lamination film comes in various types, depending on the media being laminated. For standard copy paper with text and graphic images, a standard homopolymer film can be used, which operates at 260°F to 290°F. This is the most affordable thermal film. For coated papers or graphics with heavy color, a low-melt copolymer film is used with additional adhesive qualities, running at 230°F to 260°F. Some digital presses require a more aggressive adhesive, often referred to as an extra bond film.
Benefits of Hot Lamination Film
- Variety of films depending on the media being laminated
- Thermal films are generally less expensive than cold films
- Special low-melt films are available for materials that make it harder for adhesives to penetrate the paper fibers
- Fully encapsulated materials protect against moisture and debris
Cold Lamination Film
Cold lamination uses a more aggressive adhesive applied with pressure, not heat. The adhesive is protected by a release liner until it's ready for application, usually with a cold-roll lamination machine with a release liner rewind. Often used with print media not compatible with thermal films, cold laminating films are generally more expensive but can be used with less expensive, non-heated or heat-assist laminators. Heat-assist machines apply minimal heat to soften adhesives, preventing issues like silvering, where air bubbles form over dark images.
Benefits of Cold Lamination Film
- A cold lamination machine is less expensive and easier to operate
- By applying low heat, the problem of unpleasant bubbles is solved
- Additional UV and weather protection prolongs the life of prints
- Optimal for adhesive-backed media for floor or wall decals and vehicle wraps, since only one side is laminated
