Drilling in rock-bit type?

Rock Drilling - Tools and Methods
Using an SDS drill is highly recommended. They operate at a slower speed but exert significantly more force compared to traditional hammer drills, offering a noticeable improvement in performance from the first use.
For drilling 5/16" holes, any SDS drill will suffice. It's important to note that using a drill with excessive power might cause the back of the brick to break midway through the drilling process—an issue prevalent in brick-built houses in the UK but potentially less relevant in different construction methods. Generally, drills with an impact energy exceeding 2J are too powerful for brick. However, for larger holes in concrete, higher impact energy is beneficial.
Even the most affordable imported SDS drills perform better on stone, brick, and concrete than the most expensive combination drills. If you're not planning frequent use, consider purchasing a budget-friendly corded drill under 2J.

Finding the Right Tools to Drill Into Rocks

I'm seeking the ideal tools and methods for drilling holes through rocks. Not soil, bedrock, stone walls, or small pebbles for necklaces, but specifically large, portable rocks about one cubic foot in size.
While acknowledging that the rock type can influence the procedure, I assume I need a drill press and perhaps a cooling method for the drill bit, such as water or antifreeze. Are masonry bits suitable, or should I consider other options?
Essentially, I want to drill a neat 1/2" hole completely through a sizable rock. Any direction to pertinent resources would be helpful, as most materials I have found focus on drilling bedrock for wells.
